Related Services
Within the IEP, a statement of related service are provided to the student. Related services are defined as,” services help children with disabilities benefit from their special education by providing extra help and support in needed areas, such as speaking or moving. Related services can include, but are not limited to, any of the following examples: speech-language pathology and audiology services, interpreting services, psychological services, physical and occupational therapy, recreation, and including therapeutic recreation. In order to know if a student qualifies for related services IDEA requires that every student, “be assessed in all areas related to his or her suspected disability. This evaluation must be sufficiently comprehensive so as to identify all of the child’s special education and related service’s needs, whether or not those needs are commonly linked to the disability category in which he or she has been classified.” (NICHCY, 2014)
The IEP team is charged with the tasks of reviewing,” all of the evaluation information, to identify any related services the child needs, and to include them in the IEP. Goals can be written for a related service just as they are for other special education services”. (NICHCY, 2014) The IEP must also,” specify with respect to each service: when the service will begin; how often it will be provided and for what amount of time; and where it will be provided. [§300.320] (NICHCY, 2014) Every child with a disability will not require all related services. Essentially, the IEP is written to ensure that the student’s educational needs are being met. The school district is responsible for ensuring that the related services included in the IEP are being provided including the frequency and amount. Changes cannot be made to frequency and amount without written communication and another IEP meeting. Within the related service section of the IEP parents are not responsible for covering the cost of services rendered.
Examples of Related Services within an IEP are: Audiology Services, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Psychological Therapy, Transportation Services, Speech Language Therapy, and many more.
